Guide & full description
Complete guide: Xtreme Ink Manatee 30ml
This is a professional tattoo ink in a medium grey shade, from the Xtreme Ink range, supplied in a 30 ml bottle. Its role is to serve as the mid-tone on the grey scale — the bridge between light and dark values — which is why it is suitable for fine shading, portraits, delicate transitions, stone textures, and atmospheric effects. It comes ready to use, without mixing or dilution, and the manufacturer indicates it as compatible with all types of tattoo machines: coil, rotary, and pen. The formula is vegan, cruelty-free, and compliant with REACH regulations.
How to use
- Shake or roll the bottle well before each use — with any ink, pigment settles over time, and homogenization gives you a consistent tone from the first drop to the last.
- Prepare the workstation: clean gloves, surfaces covered with protective barriers, and the bottle wiped on the outside before it enters the work area.
- Only pour the amount you need into individual ink caps, separate for each client and each session. Never insert the needle, tube, or any other instrument directly into the bottle.
- Check the tone before the actual work — on synthetic skin or a small portion of the background shading — to see how the medium grey lays down at your machine settings.
- Use it as is, without dilution. If you need lighter values, achieve them through technique (speed, angle, number of passes) or by mixing, in a separate cap, with a lighter grey from the same range.
- Work in controlled passes and build volume from the mid-tone towards dark, leaving the light values for last. A good saturation from the first pass means you don't need to obsessively go over the same area.
- Clean the needle between values in a separate container with distilled water, so you don't contaminate the next tone with traces of darker pigment.
- At the end, discard all remaining ink in the caps — do not pour back into the bottle —, close the lid tightly, wipe the bottle, and store it at room temperature, away from direct light and heat.
Tips from us
- Think of the work in terms of values, not color: establish from the beginning where the light source is and apply the mid-tone first. The rest of the grey scale builds around it much easier.
- If you prepare intermediate shades by mixing, note the proportions. For a touch-up or second session, you will need exactly the same tone, and 'by eye' rarely yields identical results.
- For a large grey wash piece, estimate the required amount from the start and prepare the bottle before the session, so you don't run out of mid-tone halfway through an already started surface.
- Take the bottle out of storage some time before the session. An ink brought to room temperature flows more predictably than a cold one.
- Label the caps when working simultaneously with multiple values — in the middle of a complex shading, two close greys can be easily confused.
- Buy the inks you use regularly from the same range: mixes between products from different families can yield results that are harder to reproduce.
Frequently asked questions
I'm a beginner and mostly do linework. Do I need a medium grey?▾
You need it when you start doing shading, not before. A medium grey tone is the piece that 'ties' the work together: it adds volume without turning black and allows you to build transitions toward light and dark. If you currently only do outlines, your priority is black; the mid-grey becomes useful when you move on to shading, portraits, or textures.
Should it be diluted with distilled water or shading solution?▾
No. The product is described as ready to use straight from the bottle, without mixing or dilution. If you want lighter values, you have two clean options: achieve them through technique (fewer passes, different angle and speed) or mix, in a separate cap, with a lighter grey from the same range. Mixing is always done in the cap, never in the original bottle.
Can it be mixed with other Xtreme inks?▾
Yes, the manufacturer recommends mixing it with other inks from the Xtreme range to obtain custom intermediate shades. In practice, it is also the simplest way to build your own value scale starting from the mid-tone. The recommendation is to stay within the same range for mixes, for predictable results from one session to the next.
Does it work with my machine? I have a pen / rotary / coil machine.▾
Yes. The manufacturer indicates it as compatible with all types of tattoo machines — coil, rotary, and pen — due to its consistent flow. What matters in practice remains your needle configuration and own settings: the same shade lays down differently with a large magnum versus a round shader, so a short test before a large piece is worthwhile.
How do I store it properly and keep it clean between sessions?▾
At room temperature, away from direct light and heat, with the lid tightly closed after each use. Wipe the outside of the bottle before and after use and keep it away from the contaminated area. The golden rule: the bottle never comes into contact with the needle or used instruments — pour into individual caps, and any leftover in the cap is discarded. Periodically check the expiry date on the label.
How does the shade look after healing?▾
As with any tattoo ink, after full healing there is a natural lightening compared to the fresh look — the healed skin settles over the pigment and 'softens' the contrast. How much it shows depends on technique, depth of implantation, the client's skin type, and aftercare. That is why, in grey scale work, many artists plan the values from the start taking this lightening into account.
