Tattoo Machine Guide: Types, Stroke Length, How to Choose

A tattoo machine does one thing: it moves a needle up and down, under control, so the pigment lands at the right depth. Motor, stroke, weight, battery — all of them are just different ways of doing that one thing. The problem is that spec sheets are written in terms that say nothing about how a machine will feel in the hand. This guide translates every specification into a practical consequence, so you can read any listing and know whether it is for you.

How it works, and the three families of machines

Whatever the technology, the cycle is the same: the needle drops, pierces the epidermis, deposits pigment in the dermis and retracts. What differs between machines is how far the needle retracts (stroke), how fast it repeats the cycle (frequency, in Hz) and how rigidly it is driven into the skin. A modern machine works across a wide frequency range — on one professional pen the manufacturer states 25 to 140 Hz, meaning roughly 25 to 140 hits per second. Effective depth does not come from the motor, it comes from how far you let the needle out of the tip, which you set from the grip or from the cartridge.

In practice, everything sold today falls into one of three categories, and the gap between the categories is wider than the gap between two models inside the same one.

  • Coil: two electromagnets pull a metal armature, which returns on a spring. The parts are visible and adjustable — springs, contact screw, capacitor. You tune it by hand, it gives strong feedback and it has that unmistakable sound.
  • Framed rotary: a DC motor turns a cam that converts rotation into linear needle movement. Quieter, less vibration, almost nothing to adjust mechanically.
  • Wireless pen: also a rotary, but with the motor inside the cylindrical body, a detachable battery and no cords. It is the dominant format today, because it is held like a marker and needs no tuning.

Stroke: the number that changes the result most

Stroke is the distance the needle travels in a full cycle — on a coil machine, the travel of the armature from its top position to its bottom one. It is measured in millimetres and it is by far the spec you feel most clearly. The usual industry convention splits it three ways: short stroke 1.8 to 2.5 mm, medium 3.0 to 3.5 mm, long 4.0 mm and up. A long stroke hits harder simply because it has more run-up before it meets the skin, so it drives large needle groupings without straining. A short stroke touches the skin more gently and takes repeated passes, which is exactly what soft shading asks for.

Manufacturer recommendations converge fairly well: FK Irons points to 3.5 to 4.2 mm for lining, 4.0 mm and up for colour packing, 2.5 to 3.0 mm for soft shading and 3.5 to 4.0 mm for whip shading. The middle of the range, 3.5 mm, is the one most shops sell as the all-round stroke — fairly, since it is the only one that makes almost anything acceptable without excelling at any of it.

Give: how softly the machine hits

Give is the elastic rebound you feel when the needle meets the skin. On a coil machine it comes for free, from the springs: the armature is allowed to yield a little, and that forgives mistakes in pressure. A classic rotary is direct drive — the needle is pushed through its whole travel whatever it meets, so it punishes a heavy hand. That difference is why artists with years on coils often find rotaries harsh the first time they pick one up.

Modern digital machines simulate give electronically. On the Flux Max, for instance, the eGive function has three selectable levels — hard, medium, soft — plus an off position, and the machine adjusts how it drives the motor according to the level you pick. The terminology differs between manufacturers (some talk about duty cycle, meaning what share of the cycle the motor is actually driving the needle), so do not compare numbers across brands: compare the feel.

Weight, balance and grip diameter

Weight decides whether you can still work properly in hour four. The real spread on the market is wide: a minimalist pen is stated at 82 g without the battery and around 146 g with the battery fitted; a reference professional pen is listed at 152 g without battery and 184 g with; an adjustable-stroke pen, with the extra mechanism inside, climbs to around 247 g. Grip diameter varies too, typically between 22 and 33 mm.

Do not chase the lightest machine, chase the balance. A light pen with the battery hanging off the back feels more tiring than a heavier one balanced close to the fingers. And diameter depends on your hand: someone who grips tightly tires less on a thick grip, someone who works from the fingers prefers a slim one.

Power: foot switch and supply vs battery

Wireless removes two cables and the foot switch, but it moves the weight into your hand and adds a consumable that degrades: the battery. A power supply with a foot switch still means unlimited runtime and fine voltage control. Many wireless pens keep an RCA port as a fallback, so you can finish the session off a supply when the battery dies — that is worth looking for explicitly. As an order of magnitude, pens usually run on 5 to 12 V and coil machines on 6 to 10 V, with lining around 7 V and shading toward 8 to 10 V.

Cartridges or traditional needles

Nearly every pen today runs cartridges: needle, membrane and housing come as one sterile piece, swapped in seconds. Coil machines classically use needles on bars plus tubes, which need separate cleaning and sterilisation if the tubes are reusable. Before you buy anything, check which consumable the machine takes — the real cost of a machine is paid monthly, in cartridges, not once at purchase.

Choosing by what you tattoo

  • Mostly fine line, micro-realism or PMU: a light pen, short to medium stroke, priority on balance and on how finely you can control the voltage.
  • Mostly traditional, blackwork or heavy outlines: a long stroke (4.0 mm and up) or a coil machine set up as a liner, where decisive hits matter more than finesse.
  • Black and grey with multiple passes: short stroke and give as soft as possible, so the skin is not wrecked by the third pass.
  • A bit of everything on a single machine: a medium 3.5 mm stroke pen, with the option of running off a power supply.
  • Working on the road or at conventions: wireless with a spare battery, no argument.

Cheap traps, and how to read a spec sheet properly

The problem with the cheapest machines is rarely that they do not start. The problem is that the motor loses speed exactly when you load it — with large needle groupings, in thick skin, which is precisely where you need consistency. The second signal is mechanical play: if the needle visibly moves sideways in the tip, the line will wobble however steady your hand is. The third is the absence of spare parts: a machine you cannot find a cap, a compatible cartridge or a replacement battery for is a consumable, not a tool. Check those three before you look at any spec list.

The order in which specifications matter, for someone actually buying: stroke, weight and balance, the power format, availability of consumables, and only then maximum frequency and housing material. High frequencies and exotic motor names are listing arguments, not differences you feel in the skin. If a machine is described purely in superlatives and never tells you its stroke, treat that as information in itself.

For everyday work, yes — a good wireless pen holds its speed under load just like a corded one. The difference is not power, it is runtime and the weight in the hand. A machine that also has an RCA port gives you both options and removes the risk of running flat in the middle of a long session.

What voltage should I start at?+

Coil machines usually run 6 to 10 V, with lining around 7 V and shading toward 8 to 10 V. Rotary pens are rated for 5 to 12 V, and typical working settings sit somewhere in the middle of that range. There is no universal number: the right voltage is the one at which your hand speed and the machine stroke produce a solid line in one pass.

Do I need two machines, one for lining and one for shading?+

Not at the start, but yes eventually. A medium stroke machine covers both jobs reasonably while you are learning. Once you start doing large pieces, two machines set up differently save time and spare the client's skin, because you stop compromising every time you switch technique.

Does the housing material matter?+

It matters for weight, balance and how well the motor sheds heat, not for line quality. Aluminium makes light machines; brass and steel make heavy ones that absorb vibration better. Choose by how your hand tires, not by the finish.

How often should a tattoo machine be replaced?+

A professional-grade machine gets replaced when the mechanism develops play, when the motor loses speed under load, or when you can no longer find parts for it — not on a fixed schedule. Coil machines can be maintained essentially indefinitely if you replace springs and the contact screw. On pens, the battery is usually the first thing to go, which is why it matters that it is detachable.
