PMU Tools: What You Need Beyond Pigments

A successful PMU procedure (brows, eyeliner, lips) depends just as much on the precision tools used before and during the work as on the pigment itself. Microapplicators, a measuring caliper and a marking pencil are the small pieces that ensure symmetry and fine control — the subject of this guide.

Microapplicators, an eyebrow measuring caliper, and a marking pencil — the small instruments that make the difference in precision during a permanent makeup procedure.

Microapplicators: precision at application and touch-up

Microapplicators are small foam-tipped sticks, available in several sizes and colours (colour-coded by thickness), used for controlled application or removal of pigment, numbing solutions or other products on small areas, such as the brow line or lip contour. Being single-use, they're discarded after each use, removing the risk of cross-contamination.

The eyebrow measuring caliper

Symmetry is the most visible criterion of a successful brow procedure — a dedicated caliper allows exact measurement of distances (start point, arch, tail) before marking begins, removing guesswork. It's a reusable instrument, disinfected between clients per the studio's standard protocol.

The brow marking pencil

Before starting the actual procedure, the brow shape is sketched with a marking pencil — usually waterproof, to hold up during the work, but fine enough for precision. The chosen colour (typically a neutral grey) helps visualise the final result without influencing the actual shade of pigment applied afterwards.

Eyeliner brush: precision for the lash line

For permanent eyeliner procedures, a fine-tip or felt-tip brush helps with preliminary line drawing or correcting the edges of applied pigment, offering extra control over a very small and sensitive area.

Why measuring tools matter as much as pigment

A PMU result is first judged at a glance, on symmetry — not on the exact pigment shade. Time invested in correct measuring and sketching before the procedure reduces the need for later corrections, which are harder to make after healing.

Întrebări frecvente

Why are microapplicators single-use?+

To remove the risk of cross-contamination between clients — they come into direct contact with pigment, solutions or skin and are discarded immediately after use, per standard PMU hygiene protocol.

Can the brow caliper be autoclaved?+

It depends on the exact material of the instrument — check the manufacturer's specifications. Being a reusable instrument that doesn't penetrate the skin, standard studio disinfection is usually sufficient, but autoclaving offers an extra safety layer where the material allows it.

What colour marking pencil is used for brows?+

Usually a neutral grey, which shows clearly on most skin tones without visually influencing the actual pigment shade that will be applied afterwards.
