Guide & full description

Complete guide: Big Wasp X RS Cartridge Needles

Big Wasp X Series Round Shader cartridges are disposable tattoo needles designed for fine shading, blending, and pepper shading in small and medium areas. The circular needle formation, with wider spacing than a liner, deposits ink in a controlled manner — exactly what you need for subtle textures, portraits, or shading in tight spaces where a magnum would be too wide. They are made from 316L stainless steel, with a transparent medical-grade plastic body and an anti-reflux silicone membrane, supplied in a box of 20 pieces individually sterilized with EO gas. They fit most pen-style rotary machines and are useful for both experienced artists and beginners building their basic kit.

How to use

  1. Wash your hands, put on disposable gloves, and prepare the workstation with protective barriers: wrap the machine and grip in film, clean work area.
  2. Check the individual sterile packaging of the cartridge — if it is open, punctured, or damaged, do not use it and switch to another one from the box.
  3. Remove the cartridge without touching the tip and secure it in the grip of the rotary machine until it locks firmly.
  4. Adjust the needle depth from the grip and set the voltage according to the technique — as a guideline, according to the manufacturer: 5.5–7 V for pepper shading (3RS–5RS), 7–8 V for standard shading (5RS–7RS), 7.5–8.5 V for dense shading (7RS–9RS); on machines with a long stroke, lower the voltage.
  5. Test first on synthetic skin: observe the ink flow through the transparent body and adjust your hand speed before working on the client.
  6. Dip the tip into the pigment cup and work the shading in controlled motions; re-dip often — an RS covers smaller surfaces than a magnum, so it uses up ink from the tip faster.
  7. At the end of the session, remove the cartridge and discard it in the sharps container — it is a disposable product.
  8. Disinfect or sterilize the grip according to your usual procedure before the next session.

Tips from us

  • Start with 5RS and 7RS — they are the most versatile configurations; 3RS is for ultra-fine details and texturing, 9RS for slightly larger areas that still require precision.
  • Practical rule for selection: areas under approximately 3 cm width → RS; over 3 cm → magnum (RM/M1), which covers faster.
  • RS is more sensitive to voltage than a magnum — small changes are immediately visible in saturation, so adjust gradually and note down the settings that work for you.
  • The silicone membrane reduces ink reflux toward the machine, but does not replace protective barriers — use them for every job.
  • Take advantage of the transparent body: if you see the ink flow decreasing, re-dip the tip in pigment instead of pressing harder on the skin.
  • Keep the box in a dry, clean place, with individual packages intact until the moment of use.
Warning: Sterile, single-use product — each cartridge is individually sterilized with EO gas. Do not re-sterilize or reuse a cartridge, even on the same client at a later session: the risk of infection and cross-contamination is real. Check the integrity of the packaging before each use, always work with gloves and protective barriers, and discard used needles exclusively in dedicated sharps containers, in accordance with studio hygiene standards.

Frequently asked questions

When should I choose RS over a magnum (RM/M1)?

When working in small or narrow areas where a magnum would be too wide: fingers, neck, behind the ear, facial details in portraits. RS is also the right choice for pepper shading (individual dots for subtle gradients) and for fine textures, e.g., skin pores in realism. The practical rule from the product description: under 3 cm width → RS, over 3 cm → RM or M1.

Will Big Wasp X RS cartridges fit my machine?

They are compatible with most pen-style rotary machines with a cartridge system — the manufacturer explicitly mentions Cheyenne Sol Nova, FK Irons Xion, Bishop Fantom, and Dragonhawk Mast Tour, among others. If your machine accepts standard cartridges, it will most likely work without issues; however, check your grip's specifications before ordering.

Can I clean and reuse a cartridge between clients?

No, absolutely not. Cartridges are single-use products, individually sterilized with EO gas — after the session, they are discarded in the sharps container. The silicone membrane limits ink reflux toward the machine, but the grip and machine still need to be protected with barriers and sanitized after each client. Reusing a cartridge means a direct risk of cross-contamination.

What gauge are the needles and what does that mean in practice?

The standard gauge is #12 (0.35 mm), with a medium taper. In practice, this means a good balance between needle rigidity and working comfort: the same cartridge works from delicate pepper shading to semi-solid shading, without needing to change thickness between techniques.

Are they suitable for beginners or only for professionals?

For both categories — the manufacturer recommends them to artists of all levels. If you are a beginner, start with 5RS (the most versatile) and 7RS, practice on synthetic skin until you calibrate your voltage and hand speed, and the transparent body of the cartridge helps you see exactly how the ink flows and how the needle behaves.

Can I draw lines with an RS?

Technically, a 3RS can produce a line, but it is not recommended for classic lining: RS needles are more spaced apart than RL, so the line comes out softer, more faded. The effect can be desired stylistically — soft, sketch-style lines — but for clear, defined outlines use an RL cartridge. The description suggests 3RS at a higher voltage (8–9 V) for a soft gray intermediate between liner and shader.

The RS (Round Shader) configuration arranges needles in a circular formation with wider spacing between tips compared to RL, creating a round contact area ideal for controlled ink deposition in small and medium zones. This is the go-to configuration for shading in tight spaces where a magnum would be too large, and for creating subtle textures like skin pores in realism portraits. The X series brings its characteristic improvements: precision laser welding, low-profile safety membrane, and optimized return mechanism. Standard #12 gauge (0.35mm) offers a good balance between rigidity and comfort, while the medium taper enables versatile use from pepper shading to semi-solid shading. Compatible with all modern rotary pen-style machines: Cheyenne Sol Nova, FK Irons Xion, Bishop Fantom, Dragonhawk Mast Tour, and others. Available in configurations from 3RS through 14RS. Compared to Kwadron RS, which excels at premium consistency, Big Wasp X RS delivers a very close experience at a significantly lower price. Against Cheyenne Craft RS, Big Wasp X wins on ink flow and loses marginally on durability. Box of 20 individually EO-sterilized cartridges, CE compliant. Recommended for artists of all levels seeking a versatile and reliable RS. Frequently Asked Questions
