Complete guide: S8 RED Tattoo Stencil Paper for printer / manual
The S8 Red transfer sheet is an A4 stencil paper with a red thermal coating — not the classic purple — designed for tattoo artists who want a different contrast on the design outline. It can be used either printed on a thermal printer (e.g., Brother PocketJet, Spirit) or by manual/freehand tracing with a pen or stylus, making it suitable for any studio workflow. It is part of the S8 system and, according to the manufacturer, offers the best performance when used alongside other S8 Red range products (transfer gel, tattoo gel).
How to use
- Prepare the skin area: clean it, shave any hair, and disinfect with isopropyl alcohol before applying the stencil.
- Apply a thin layer of transfer gel or lotion to the skin so that the thermal coating on the sheet adheres evenly.
- If printing on a thermal printer: set the format to A4 and orient the sheet with the thermal coating facing the print head, then print the design.
- If working manually: draw or trace the outline directly onto the thermal coating of the sheet using a pen or stylus, applying constant pressure.
- Place the sheet (the side with the transferred ink) onto the prepared skin and press evenly, without sliding, to ensure complete transfer of the lines.
- Carefully peel off from one corner, checking that the entire red outline remains clear on the skin before starting the tattoo.
- Manually correct any smudged or incomplete line portions with a surgical marker before turning on the tattoo machine.
Tips from us
- For the best stencil adhesion and durability on the skin, the S8 Red sheet is designed to work together with other S8 Red products (transfer gel and tattoo gel).
- On lighter and medium skin tones, red provides good visual contrast; on dark skin, a purple or green stencil may remain more visible — choose the color based on the client.
- The sheet is dual-compatible: keep both the thermal printing option and the manual option handy for situations where you don't have access to a printer.
- Store the sheets in their individual packaging until use, away from excessive heat and moisture, to keep the thermal coating intact.
- Always test the clarity of the transferred line on a small area before starting the actual session, especially if you change the type of transfer gel used.
Frequently asked questions
Why a red stencil instead of the classic purple?▾
According to S8, red provides good visual contrast on light and medium skin tones, clearly standing out from already tattooed lines — especially useful if you are working over an old tattoo with black or gray lines. It is also a matter of preference: some artists find red easier to follow visually during work. On dark skin, a purple or green stencil may still remain more visible than the red one.
Does it work with my thermal stencil printer?▾
Yes, the S8 Red sheet is dual-compatible and works with standard thermal stencil printers, such as Brother PocketJet or Spirit models. Set the printer to A4 format, orient the sheet with the thermal coating facing the print head, and print normally.
Can I also use it for manual tracing, without a printer?▾
Yes. The sheet can also be used for freehand manual tracing, drawing directly on the thermal coating with a pen or stylus — useful if you don't have access to a thermal printer or prefer to work manually.
How do you clean the red stencil off the skin at the end?▾
Just like the classic purple stencil: with isopropyl alcohol, a stencil cleaning solution, antibacterial soap and warm water, or mineral oil-based products. No special methods are needed just because the pigment is red.
Is it compatible with the stencil solutions I already use?▾
The S8 Red sheet is compatible with common professional stencil transfer solutions, such as Electrum, Spirit, or Stencil Stuff, so you don't need to change the rest of your kit just to use it.
Is it suitable for all skin types?▾
The pigment used is described as safe for all skin types. However, the visual visibility of the outline differs according to skin tone: on light and medium skin, red provides good contrast, while on dark skin, a purple or green stencil may be easier to follow.
