The question comes up constantly, and usually too broadly: which cartridge do I use for fine line? The answer is not a code on a box, it is a combination of three variables — how many needles are in the grouping, what diameter they are, and how long the taper is. Diameter sets the thinnest line you can lay, taper sets how much pigment goes in per penetration, and needle count sets how much ink the tip carries between dips. This guide goes through each variable and gives you the decision, not the theory.

What fine line actually means

In practice, fine line is not a needle code, it is a result: a thin, continuous line with clean edges that is still readable once healed. You can get there with a 3RL in 0.35 mm if your hand is good, and you can ruin a fine line with a 1RL in 0.25 mm if you go too deep or pass over the same path three times. The first decision is not which cartridge, it is how thin the line has to stay in five years — because lines get heavier over time, never thinner.

Diameter: 0.25, 0.30 or 0.35 mm

The diameter codes are fairly consistent across manufacturers: #12 means 0.35 mm, #10 means 0.30 mm, #08 means 0.25 mm and #06 means 0.20 mm. The word bugpin is generally used for anything thinner than the 0.35 mm standard, most often 0.30 and 0.25, but the labelling varies from supplier to supplier. Read the millimetres, not the word.

  • 0.35 mm (#12): a heavier line, deposits pigment fast, forgives changes in hand speed. Good for a classic outline, not for fine line.
  • 0.30 mm (#10): the most useful compromise for thin lines that still have to hold up over time. Asks for a little more attention to saturation.
  • 0.25 mm (#08): the thinnest in regular use in conventional tattooing. A very fine line, but it deposits little pigment — the risk is repeating the pass and causing more trauma than a heavier needle would have.
  • 0.20 mm (#06): extreme detail and PMU territory, not something you keep on the tray by default for long lines.

Rule of thumb: the further you drop the diameter, the less tolerance you have. A 0.25 will not forgive one extra pass.

Taper matters more than the name on the box

Taper is the length of the sharpened tip of the needle. The longer it is, the finer the penetration and the less pigment released per insertion — exactly what you want on fine lines. The problem is that the names are not standardised between brands: Kwadron lists long taper at 7 mm, medium taper at 5 mm and short taper at 3 mm on its main line (other lines from the same maker differ), while other catalogues call a 5 mm tip a long taper and reserve 7 mm for double long taper, and Cheyenne sells cartridges marked super long taper at 5.5 mm. Do not compare words, compare the millimetres on the spec sheet.

For fine line you want the longest taper the brand you work with offers: it deposits in a controlled way and gives you time to work clean. Short and medium tapers push more pigment at once and are built for heavy traditional lines, where you want saturation in a single pass.

RL, RLB and the rest of the codes

RL stands for round liner: needles held in a tight bundle, built for lines. RS stands for round shader: the same round arrangement, but with the needles spaced further apart, built for shading and filling small areas. Some brands add a B (RLB = round liner bugpin) to flag the reduced diameter, others put the diameter up front — Kwadron, for example, writes 25/3RLLT, meaning 0.25 mm, 3 needles, round liner long taper. The code differs, the tool is the same kind of thing; read the spec sheet, not the abbreviation.

What you must not confuse: RL with RS. A round shader with the same needle count gives you a wider, less defined line, because the needles are not tight against each other. If you want a line, take a liner.

When to use a 1RL and when a 3RL

A 1RL is the thinnest thing you can put in a machine and it is tempting for fine line, but it has two problems: it deposits very little pigment, so you are pushed into repeating the pass, and it has no body to hold ink at the tip, so it dries out fast and starts to scratch. It is useful for small detail, texture, tiny script and fine stippling — not for long, continuous lines.

A 3RL is the default choice for fine line over long paths. It holds ink better, gives you a clean line in one pass and is far more forgiving on curves. If you work fine line back to back and want one cartridge on the tray, a 3RL with a long taper in 0.30 or 0.25 mm covers most situations.

Setup and technique decide the result, not the cartridge

A thin cartridge does not compensate for the wrong depth. The target is the upper dermis, roughly a millimetre below the surface; go deeper and you reach tissue that has nothing to hold the pigment in place. Skin is not the same thickness everywhere — the epidermis ranges from a few hundredths of a millimetre on the eyelid to over a millimetre on the palm and the sole — so the working depth changes from area to area and gets recalibrated, not memorised.

On fine lines, stretch the skin firmly and evenly, keep the machine close to perpendicular to the surface, and go with one confident pass. If the line comes out pale, the cause is usually hand speed or the stretch, not the needle diameter. Switching to a heavier needle so it takes is the fastest way to lose exactly the fineness you chose the cartridge for.

Common fine line mistakes

  • Picking 0.25 mm because it sounds precise, then passing three times to saturate the line — more trauma than working 0.30 mm in a single pass.
  • Comparing long taper between two brands without looking at the millimetres.
  • Using a round shader in the belief that it is a thinner liner.
  • Working fine line on thin, mobile skin without reducing the depth.
  • Promising the client the line will stay identical. It will not — every line widens slightly over time, and the thinner it is, the more that shows.
