Guide & full description

Complete guide: EBERHARD Faber Red Marker

A professional pre-drawing skin marker produced by Eberhard Faber in Germany, in the red variant — the color you turn to when you need maximum contrast, for example on medium or dark skin tones where the classic blue gets lost. The soft brush tip draws lines from 1 to 6 mm, so the same tool covers both fine details and filling in the sketch. It is useful both for artists who draw freehand directly on the skin and for those who complete or adjust a transferred stencil.

How to use

Prepare the work area: the skin must be clean and completely dry — on damp or oily skin, the water-based ink does not adhere evenly.
First sketch the main lines of the design with light pressure; the soft brush tip allows lines from about 1 mm (details) up to 6 mm (filling), depending on pressure and working angle.
Use the red where visibility matters: at symmetry and anchor points of the design or when pre-drawing on skin tones where blue no longer has contrast.
If you make a mistake, wipe the area with water and soap or isopropyl alcohol, let the skin dry completely, and redraw.
When the sketch is final, you can set it with a very thin layer of petroleum jelly or a similar product, so it withstands wiping during work better.
After the session, the remaining marks are easily removed with water and soap.
Put the cap on immediately after use, so the brush tip does not dry out.

Tips from us

On very light skin, the red can be mistaken for natural redness of irritated skin — on these tones, the blue from the same range is safer.
On complex projects, color-code: for example red for reference points and blue or orange for outlines — reduces errors in long sessions.
On already tattooed skin (cover-up), first test visibility on a small area: red shows well over black-gray but gets lost over warm colors of an existing tattoo.
Practice sketches on artificial skin before drawing on a client — the marker works just as well on practice surfaces.
Apply the setting petroleum jelly in a thin layer; a thick layer tends to smudge the lines rather than protect them.

Warning: The marker is not a sterile instrument and is not certified as a medical device: do not use it on damaged, irritated, or freshly tattooed skin, and for markings that require sterility, use a sterile surgical marker. The colors are dermatologically tested and intended for short-term skin contact, and the manufacturer declares compliance with the requirements of the Tattoo Products Ordinance. Integrate pre-drawing into the studio's hygiene protocol and avoid direct contact of the tip with bodily fluids or contaminated surfaces.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the red variant and the blue or orange one?▾

All are part of the same Eberhard Faber range and have the same basic features: brush tip, 1–6 mm lines, water-based washable ink. They differ only in contrast on the skin: blue is the standard choice for light and medium tones, red offers visibility on medium and dark tones, and orange is an intermediate variant. If you work with clients with varied skin tones, the blue + red combination covers most situations.

How do I wipe the lines off the skin if I want to correct the drawing?▾

The ink is water-based and is removed with water and soap or isopropyl alcohol. Wipe the area, let it dry completely, and redraw. At the end of the session, any remaining marks wash off just as easily, without residue.

Does the marking last throughout the entire tattoo session?▾

Being washable, the marking can fade with repeated wiping during work. The manufacturer recommends setting the sketch with petroleum jelly or similar products: a thin layer applied over the final drawing helps it last noticeably better. For long sessions, keep the marker handy and refresh key lines as needed.

Is it safe for the client's skin?▾

The colors are dermatologically tested, the ink is water-based and intended for short-term skin contact, and the manufacturer declares compliance with the requirements of the Tattoo Products Ordinance. However, it is not a sterile instrument: do not use it on skin with lesions or irritations and follow the studio's hygiene protocol. If a client has a history of skin sensitivity, test on a small area first.

Can I use it on artificial skin for practice?▾

Yes — the product is also listed under the artificial skin and drawing tools category. It's a good way to practice your freehand sketches and brush tip control before working on a client. On synthetic surfaces, the ink is also wiped off with water and soap or isopropyl alcohol.

How do I maintain the marker to make it last as long as possible?▾

The most important thing is the cap: put it on tightly immediately after use, otherwise the water-based ink dries in the brush tip. Keep the tip away from contact with petroleum jelly, fluids, or dirty surfaces — besides hygiene reasons, residues shorten its lifespan. Store the marker at room temperature, away from direct heat.

Product description

The Tattoo Skinmarker by Eberhard Faber: a skinmarker that meets all the requirements of the art of tattooing. - SOFT brush tip, ideal for filling and detailing - line width 1 to 6mm - Dermatologically tested colors - Fixable with vaseline or similar products - Washable with soap and water - Meets requirements according to the Tattooing Product Ordinance Made in Germany. The EBERHARD Faber Red Marker is the maximum visibility variant from the German quality pre-drawing marker range, designed for tattoo artists who work on medium and dark skin tones where lighter colors lose contrast. Red is one of the most visible colors on the chromatic spectrum on human skin, perceptible even on dark tones (Fitzpatrick IV-V). EBERHARD Faber, with its 250+ year tradition, guarantees German quality: consistent ink flow, resistant tip, and uniform color. The water-based ink is non-toxic and safe for short-duration skin contact. In tattooing, the EBERHARD Faber Red Marker is used strategically: for marking critical reference points (symmetry points, design anchor points), for pre-drawing on dark skin where blue is no longer visible, and for color-coding different design elements. Some artists use red exclusively for symmetry reference points, keeping blue or orange for contours — this system reduces errors in complex sessions. The tip produces medium-thickness lines. It wipes off with isopropyl alcohol or soap. Important: on very fair skin, red can be confused with natural skin redness or irritation — on these tones, prefer blue. Available on tatuat.ro alongside Blue and Orange variants. Frequently Asked Questions
