Guide & full description

Complete guide: Cheyenne Spirit Black

The Cheyenne Spirit (also known as HAWK Spirit) in black is a professional rotary tattoo machine, manufactured in Germany according to the medical standard ISO 13485. With a 2.5 mm stroke and a quiet, low-vibration DC motor, it is designed for shading and filling — fine transitions, delicate shades, and even fills, suitable for black & grey and color realism. It weighs only 90 g (without grip), allowing for long sessions without tiring your hand. Important: it is delivered without a grip, which you choose separately, according to your preferred grip style.

How to use

  1. Mount a compatible grip on the machine body — Cheyenne recommends HAWK grips (S 22.0 mm, M 25.4 mm) or SOL grips (S 22.4 mm, M 25.4 mm, L 33.0 mm). Note that the machine does not come with a grip included.
  2. Insert a cartridge into the grip and press until it locks into place. For safety, use Cheyenne cartridges with a membrane, which prevent fluid reflux inside the device.
  3. Connect the machine to the power supply using the 3.5 mm jack cable included in the package. If your power supply has a 6.3 mm output, use the included adapter (6.3 mm to 3.5 mm).
  4. Turn on the power supply and set the voltage within the machine's operating range (6–12.6 V). Adjust the needle depth (0–4.0 mm) from the adjustable part of the grip.
  5. Test on artificial skin and listen to the operation: the motor should run smoothly and quietly, with low vibrations, in the machine's reactive mode.
  6. Work on shades and fills starting at a lower voltage and increasing gradually until you achieve the desired stitch, rather than starting directly at a high voltage.
  7. After the session, remove and discard the disposable cartridge, remove the barrier film, and clean/sterilize the reusable grip (or use a disposable grip).

Tips from us

  • Choose the grip separately, in the size you are comfortable with: thinner for fine control, thicker for a relaxed grip during long sessions.
  • Use Cheyenne cartridges with a safety membrane — they protect the machine from reflux and ensure clean operation.
  • For shading and filling, start at a low voltage and increase gradually; you will have more control over saturation than if you work at a high voltage from the start.
  • If you use a power supply from another manufacturer, check if you need a compatible start-up cable (patch cord), as indicated by the manufacturer.
  • Protect the machine and cable with barrier film at every session — you reduce cleaning time and the risk of contamination.
  • Take advantage of the low weight (90 g): keep your hand relaxed, there is no need to squeeze the machine tightly for control.
Warning: Tattooing involves contact with blood and fluids, so hygiene is mandatory. Use sterile, disposable cartridges and discard them immediately after use. Protect the machine and cable with barrier film for every client, and reusable grips must be properly cleaned and sterilized between sessions (or use disposable grips). Safety membrane cartridges reduce the risk of fluid reflux into the machine. Do not work outside the device's operating range and keep the motor away from liquids.

Frequently asked questions

Does the machine come with a grip included?

No. The Cheyenne Spirit is delivered without a grip and can be customized with HAWK grips (S 22.0 mm, M 25.4 mm) or SOL grips (S 22.4 mm, M 25.4 mm, L 33.0 mm), which you choose separately. The package includes the machine, a cable for the hand piece, and a cable adapter from 6.3 mm to 3.5 mm.

What cartridges can I use and why does the safety membrane matter?

The manufacturer recommends Cheyenne cartridges with a safety membrane. The membrane prevents ink and fluids from flowing back into the machine, meaning cleaner work and protection for the device. The cartridges are disposable: they are used on a single client and discarded after the session.

Does it work with any power supply?

The machine connects via a protected 3.5 mm jack, so it is compatible with power supplies that have this connection, including Cheyenne power supplies. The operating voltage range is 6–12.6 V. If you use a power supply from another manufacturer, you may need an additional start-up cable, as specified by the manufacturer.

What techniques is the Cheyenne Spirit suitable for?

Thanks to its 2.5 mm stroke and frequency of 70–160 Hz, the Spirit is optimized for shading and filling: smooth transitions, delicate shades, and even fills, very useful in black & grey and color realism. It is a professional machine; it is not designed for absolute beginners, but rather as an accessible entry point into the Cheyenne range for artists.

How do I properly maintain the machine?

Protect it at every session with barrier film on the body and the cable, use disposable cartridges and discard them immediately after use. Clean and sterilize reusable grips between clients or opt for disposable grips. Keep the motor away from liquids and store the machine protected, in its packaging or a clean case.

How much does it weigh and what warranty does it have?

The motor weighs only 90 g (without grip), making it lightweight for long sessions. It is manufactured in Germany according to the medical standard ISO 13485 and comes with a 24-month warranty, which covers manufacturing defects.
