Guide & full description

Complete guide: Classic Thermal Tattoo Stencil Transfer Paper Roll

This roll of thermal transfer paper allows you to print clear tattoo stencils directly from a thermal printer, without ink. It comes in a continuous format, 30 m long and 21.5 cm wide, from Spirit (ReproFX), and is designed for artists and studios who work frequently with stencils and want to cut exactly what they need. The violet pigment provides good contrast on the skin, and the roll format reduces waste compared to individual sheets.

How to use

Mount the roll on the roll holder of the thermal stencil printer (e.g., Brother PocketJet with roll adapter), with the thermal layer facing the print head.
Set the width to 21.5 cm (215 mm) and the appropriate length for your design in the printer driver.
Send the design to print — the thermal printer traces the violet lines using heat, without ink.
Cut the sheet from the roll to the stencil size, leaving a small margin for handling.
Separate the top sheet, the one with the violet image, from the backing layers (protective, carbon, and yellow); on the skin you only use the sheet with the image.
Prepare the skin: clean it, shave the area if necessary, and degrease it, then apply a stencil transfer solution.
Place the sheet with the image on the skin, press evenly for a few seconds, then carefully lift it — the violet stencil remains on the skin.
Check the clarity and position of the stencil before starting the tattoo.

Tips from us

Cut only what you need for each stencil — economy and waste reduction are the main advantages of the roll format.
Store the roll in a cool, dry place away from direct light, because thermal paper is sensitive to heat.
Check the orientation of the thermal layer when feeding; if you put it in reverse, the printer will not trace anything.
Handle the sheet by the edges — grease and sweat from your fingers can affect the transfer quality.
Keep the end of the roll straight and clean, so that feeding into the printer is smooth without jams.
A clear stencil also depends on a good transfer solution and well-prepared skin, not just the paper.

Warning: Thermal paper is sensitive to heat, so do not leave it in a car in the sun, near a radiator, or in direct light — it can darken or degrade. For hygiene, the sheet that touches the skin is used once per client and discarded; maintain protective barriers on work surfaces and apply the stencil only on clean, disinfected skin. The product is vegan-friendly and safe for most skin types, but for a client with sensitive or reactive skin, it is prudent to test on a small area first. It is not a medical device.

Frequently asked questions

What printer does the Spirit Classic roll work with?▾

It is compatible with thermal stencil printers (thermal copiers), including Brother PocketJet models. For the roll format, you need a roll holder or roll adapter mounted on the printer, and the feed width must be 21.5 cm. If your printer only accepts individual sheets, check if there is a compatible roll accessory.

Does the roll come pre-printed or do I need a printer?▾

It is blank thermal paper — you create the image by printing the design with a thermal stencil printer. No ink is used: the heat of the print head transfers the violet design onto the top sheet.

What is the difference between the roll and individual sheets?▾

It is the same type of Spirit Classic paper, just in a continuous 30 m format. You cut exactly what you need, reduce waste, and in the long run it is more economical per area. Individual sheets remain more convenient if you print rarely or if your printer does not have a roll support.

How do I maintain and store the roll?▾

Keep it in its packaging, in a dry and cool place, away from light and heat sources, because thermal paper reacts to temperature. The sheet that touches the skin is single-use per client, and the rest of the roll remains clean if you handle it by the edges.

Can I draw the stencil by hand on this paper?▾

Spirit Classic is designed for thermal transfer, i.e., for printing with a printer. For manual drawing, there is dedicated freehand/hectographic paper that works differently — if you do a lot of freehand work, look for that type of paper.

How long does a 30 m roll last?▾

It depends on the studio's volume and the average size of stencils: the more and larger stencils you print, the faster it is consumed. The advantage of the roll format is that you cut exactly what you need; keep an eye on the remaining roll diameter to reorder in time.
