Professional Disinfectants for a Studio: How to Choose Between Them
A solid studio hygiene protocol doesn't rely on a single product, but on a few complementary types of disinfectants — surface wipes, surgical spirit for skin, cleaning foams and specialised antiseptic lotions. This guide explains the role of each and when to use it.
Alcohol wipes, surgical spirit, cleaning foams and antiseptic lotions — the role of each type of disinfectant in a tattoo, PMU or piercing studio.
Disinfectant wipes for surfaces
Wipes impregnated with alcohol solution (70-85% concentrations) are the most practical format for quickly disinfecting work surfaces between clients — table, articulated arms, machine grips, switches. Being pre-impregnated and individually dosed, they remove the concentration variability that comes with manual spraying.

Surgical spirit
Liquid surgical spirit remains useful for quick hand disinfection between procedure steps, or for areas where a wipe isn't practical. Store it in a sealed container, away from heat sources, as it's a flammable product.
Specialised cleaning foams and lotions
Cleaning foams formulated specifically for prepping skin before tattooing or piercing offer a gentler alternative to concentrated alcohol, suited to sensitive skin or repeated cleaning during a long session. Antiseptic wash lotions are designed for the initial cleaning of skin, before the actual disinfection step.
Skin cleaning foams
How they combine in a daily protocol
A typical sequence: initial skin cleaning with a gentle antiseptic lotion, followed by disinfection of work surfaces with alcohol-based wipes, with surgical spirit on hand for quick hand disinfection between steps. Each product has a specific role — they don't replace each other, they complement each other.
Not all alcohol-based solutions have the same concentration or are indicated for direct skin contact. Read each product's label before using it on skin versus only on work surfaces.
Întrebări frecvente
What's the difference between disinfectant wipes and liquid surgical spirit?+
Wipes offer a controlled, ready-to-use dose, ideal for work surfaces between clients. Liquid alcohol is more flexible for quick hand disinfection or areas where a wipe isn't practical, but needs more care when applying.
Can cleaning foam replace alcohol for surface disinfection?+
No — cleaning foams are formulated for skin prep, not for disinfecting reusable work surfaces. The two categories have different roles in the protocol.
Why does the alcohol concentration of wipes matter?+
Typical concentrations (70-85%) are antimicrobially effective without being excessively harsh. Too low a concentration reduces effectiveness, while very frequent use of a very high concentration can irritate skin on direct contact.
