Guide & full description

Complete guide: Cannula 16G gray

This is a sterile, single-use cannula with valve, in gauge 16G — quickly identified by its gray color code. The needle has a double-ground, siliconized tip to pass through tissue with minimal resistance, and the flexible cannula left in the channel guides the jewelry without leaving the pathway unprotected. It is designed for professional piercers who work with the cannula piercing technique, as well as for artists who want a stock of clearly labeled gauges in the studio.

How to use

  1. Prepare your work area: disposable gloves, disinfected surface, and all materials within reach, including a sharps container.
  2. Check the blister before anything: it must be intact and sealed. If the packaging is damaged, do not use the product — sterility is no longer guaranteed.
  3. Disinfect the piercing area and mark the entry and exit points.
  4. Open the sterile packaging immediately before the procedure and prepare the cannula according to your working technique, without touching the needle with your hands or other surfaces.
  5. Pierce along the marked path with a firm, continuous motion, holding the needle and cannula together.
  6. Retract the metal needle and leave the flexible cannula in the channel, then insert the jewelry guided by the cannula — the fresh channel is never left exposed.
  7. Secure the jewelry, fully retract the cannula, and immediately discard the needle and cannula into the sharps container.

Tips from us

  • Use the color code to your advantage: gray means 16G. Keep gauges separate in stock so you don't confuse them during work.
  • Match the cannula gauge to the jewelry thickness before opening the packaging — a jewelry that is too thick will not pass through the cannula.
  • Do not touch the needle tip to anything before insertion: you compromise both sterility and the siliconized layer that facilitates penetration.
  • Open the blister only in front of the client, immediately before the procedure — it inspires confidence and reduces contamination risk.
  • The cannula piercing technique requires practice: if you are a beginner, learn it under the guidance of an experienced piercer, not directly on clients.
Warning: Sterile single-use device: do not reuse or resterilize under any circumstances. After use, the product has potential biological risk — dispose of it immediately in a dedicated sharps container, according to accepted medical practice and local regulations. Do not use the product if the packaging is damaged. Latex-free.

Frequently asked questions

What does 16G mean and why is the cannula gray?

"G" stands for gauge, the standard system for denoting thickness: the smaller the number, the thicker the needle. 16G is a gauge commonly used in professional piercing, and gray is the standardized color code for this gauge in cannulas — you recognize it at a glance without reading the label. According to product specifications, the cannula has an inner diameter of 1.8 mm and a length of 45 mm.

What is the difference compared to a classic piercing needle?

With a classic needle, the jewelry must be transferred directly into the fresh channel immediately after withdrawing the needle. With a cannula, after piercing you withdraw only the metal needle, and the flexible cannula remains in place in the channel; the jewelry is inserted guided by the cannula, which exits as the jewelry advances. Thus the channel is never left unprotected, and jewelry insertion is more controlled — which is why many piercers in Europe prefer this technique.

Can I reuse the cannula if I sterilize it in an autoclave?

No, under no circumstances. It is strictly a single-use device: after first use, the needle tip loses its sharpness, and the materials are not designed for resterilization. The manufacturer explicitly states that a used product has potential biological risk and must not be reused. Reuse violates salon hygiene standards and endangers the client — a new cannula for every procedure, without exception.

How do I choose the right gauge for the client's jewelry?

The practical rule: the jewelry must be able to pass through the cannula, so its thickness must be equal to or less than the inner diameter of the cannula — for this model, 1.8 mm. Choose the 16G cannula when working with jewelry of the corresponding gauge; for thicker or thinner jewelry, use the appropriate gauge cannula, identified by its color code. The final decision also depends on the anatomical area and your experience as a piercer.

Does it contain latex? What do I do if the client has allergies?

According to the manufacturer, the product does not contain latex — it is made from silicone rubber and stainless steel, and the needle tip is siliconized. Even so, always discuss with the client their history of allergies and sensitivities before the procedure, including to metals or disinfectants, and stop the procedure if unusual reactions occur.

How do I properly dispose of the cannula after use?

After the procedure, the used cannula is considered potentially infectious waste. Dispose of it immediately, without manually recapping the needle, into a special sharps container, never in household trash. Disposal must follow accepted medical practice and local regulations regarding medical waste — any professional studio must have a contract for the collection of such waste.

Product description

Gray cannula 16G Inner diameter: 1.8mm Length: 45mm Needle: 1.25 mm needle Sterile, valved branules are single-use and have a double-pointed, siliconized tip. Made of silicone rubber and stainless steel. The product used may have biological risk potential. Handle and dispose of in accordance with accepted medical practice and local laws and regulations. The product must not be reused. Does not contain latex. The 16G Grey Cannula is a large-bore peripheral intravenous catheter widely used in professional piercing procedures for inserting substantial-gauge jewelry. The 16 gauge specification (1.7mm outer needle diameter, 1.3mm inner cannula diameter) allows easy passage of equivalent or smaller gauge jewelry, making it the standard for piercings such as thick tragus, conch, nipple, navel, and various body piercings requiring robust jewelry. The grey color code is universally standardized per ISO norms for rapid gauge identification — essential in clinical environments where gauge confusion can cause unnecessary tissue trauma. The cannula construction from PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) or thermoplastic polyurethane ensures excellent flexibility and biocompatibility, reducing irritation risk during insertion. The inner needle of surgical-grade stainless steel features a tri-faceted tip (back-cut bevel) that penetrates skin with minimal resistance, creating a clean channel without tissue laceration. Unlike traditional piercing needles (needle blades), the cannula offers the major advantage of remaining in situ after needle withdrawal — jewelry is inserted through the cannula, eliminating the need for direct needle-to-jewelry transfer that can traumatize the fresh channel. Each cannula is individually sterilized with ethylene oxide, packaged in a blister with sterilization indicator, CE marked, and strictly single-use. The product comes with fixation wings and an injection port that detach easily for piercing procedures. Recommended for professional piercers working with 16G jewelry — straight barbells, curved barbells, captive bead rings, and circular barbells. Compatible with all biosafety protocols in tattoo and piercing studios across Romania and the EU. Frequently Asked Questions
