Complete guide: Set of 5 rebar risers

This set of five metal washers is a fine-tuning accessory for coil tattoo machines. They mount on the armature bar and change the distance between it and the electromagnetic coils, i.e., the air gap, which directly affects the needle stroke type. It is useful for tattoo artists who work with traditional coil machines and want to adjust the machine's behavior for lines or shading. With a thickness of 1 mm per piece, the five washers cover a wide range of setups.

How to use

Turn off and unplug the machine from the power source before making any adjustments.
Loosen the rivet or screw that secures the armature bar to the machine frame.
Stack the desired number of washers (from the 5) on the lower side of the armature bar, aligning the 4 mm hole with the rivet or mounting screw.
Re-secure the armature bar and make sure the washers sit flat and parallel, with no lateral play.
Visually check that the air gap between the armature bar and the coil core is uniform and that the bar oscillates freely.
Readjust, if necessary, the contact screw and the front spring tension to maintain the correct setting after changing the distance.
Test the machine dry, without skin, observing the stroke and speed; add or remove one washer at a time until you get the desired behavior.

Tips from us

Change one washer at a time and test after each step — that way you understand exactly what effect each piece has.
More washers mean a smaller air gap, thus a shorter and faster stroke, suitable for lines; fewer washers give a longer, softer stroke, good for shading.
Write down your preferred setup (number of washers, contact position, spring tension) so you can easily reproduce it.
Keep the surfaces of the washers and the armature bar clean — dust or residue prevents flat contact and can unbalance the oscillation.
Keep the complete set together; at 1 mm per piece, the five washers give you flexibility for most common adjustments.

Warning: Always work with the machine turned off and unplugged. Do not over-tighten the rivet or screw — you could deform the bar or the washers. Adjustments are made before wrapping the machine in a protective barrier and starting the tattoo; the washers are machine parts, not sterile components that touch the skin. Always check that the bar oscillates freely and the air gap is uniform before using the machine on a client.

Frequently asked questions

Will they fit my machine?▾

The center hole is 4 mm, the outer diameter is 10 mm, and the thickness is 1 mm per washer. Check whether the rivet or screw that secures the armature bar passes through the 4 mm hole. They are designed for standard coil machines; for machines with unusual dimensions, compare the measurements before installation.

How many washers should I use?▾

There is no fixed number — it depends on the desired setup. Start from the machine's current setting and add or remove one washer at a time, testing the behavior with each change. The set of 5 covers the full range of common adjustments, so you have enough pieces to experiment.

Do they work on rotary machines too?▾

No. These washers are specific to coil machines, which oscillate the armature bar through an electromagnetic mechanism. Rotary machines do not have an armature bar — there, the needle stroke is changed by swapping the cam, not by shims.

What are they made of and why does the material matter?▾

The set contains 5 metal washers. In coil machines, the material must be ferromagnetic to interact with the magnetic field of the coils; a non-magnetic material (aluminum, plastic) would only change the mechanical distance, without the full effect on the stroke. That is why metal washers are the correct part for this adjustment.

How do I maintain them?▾

Wipe them clean of dust and residue and keep them dry to avoid rust and uneven contact. Periodically check that the surfaces remain flat. Being machine parts, they don't touch the skin, but the assembled machine must be protected with a disposable barrier during tattooing.

Do I need to adjust other components when changing the washers?▾

Yes. When you change the number of washers, you may need to adjust the contact screw (for proper contact gap) and the front spring tension so the machine runs correctly. Changing the washers is part of the complete tuning process of a coil machine.

Product description

Inner diameter: 4 mm Outer diameter: 10 mm Thickness: 1 mm The set contains 5 metal washers The 5-Piece Armature Bar Spacer Set is an essential accessory for coil tattoo machines, small metal components mounted on the armature bar to adjust the distance between it and the electromagnetic coils. This seemingly minor distance directly influences machine behavior: armature bar oscillation speed, electromagnetic attraction force, electrical contact duration, and consequently the stroke type and needle hitting power. Spacers work by adding metallic material to the armature bar, increasing the ferromagnetic mass exposed to the coil magnetic field and modifying the air gap distance between the bar and coil core. A larger distance (without spacers or thin spacers) produces a longer, slower stroke — ideal for shading and coloring. A smaller distance (with thick spacers) produces a shorter, faster stroke — suitable for precise lining. The 5-piece set gives the tattoo artist the flexibility to experiment with various configurations to achieve the exact desired machine behavior. Manufactured from quality steel or ferromagnetic alloy, the spacers have flat and parallel surfaces for uniform contact with the armature bar, preventing asymmetric vibrations. They mount by simply stacking on the underside of the armature bar, secured by the same rivets or screws that hold the bar on the machine frame. An indispensable accessory for fine-tuning coil machines. Frequently Asked Questions
